The Catch to the US Allowing Air Travel to Cuba
The U.S. and Cuba announced on Thursday an arrangement that will allow scheduled air service between the two countries for the first time in more than 50 years.

“We continue to have differences with the Cuban government”, Obama said, “but we raise those issues directly, and we will always stand for human rights and the universal values that we support around the globe”.
American has operated charter service to Cuba since 1991, flying from Miami, Tampa and Los Angeles to the Cuban cities of Camaguey, Cienfuegos, Havana, Holguin and Santa Clara. Major League Baseball stars including Cuban-born defectors Yasiel Puig and Jose Abreu were warmly welcomed by the Cuban government this week on a goodwill trip meant to pave the way for spring training games in Cuba in 2016. “It’s the best way for us because we have parents there and here and this is very good for relations”.
Tony Castro, the youngest son of former Cuban president Fidel Castro, says baseball is helping Cuba and the United States to reunite. “I think you’ll see a lot more Republicans shifting their position”. It’ll likely take months for the full flight schedule to take off.
On specific topics, Cuba and USA officials have engaged in talks to address environment and marine protection, counternarcotics, direct postal services and travel to the island.
Airlines will have to apply for permission from US regulators to fly specific routes between the countries, and the timeline for this was not immediately clear. Obama has eased some provisions of the embargo, but many of its requirements are included in USA law and would have to be changed by Congress, where there is opposition to doing that.
The deal was announced on Thursday, December 17, exactly one year since President Barack Obama and President Raul Castro announced a historic detente.
But the current American diplomat, who’s in charge of the embassy in Havana right now, said they are making progress along the Cuban streets, but it’s going to take some time.
American and JetBlue have been among the most outspoken in the desire to begin regular flights to Cuba, though most big carriers say they’re interested in doing so.

Regular commercial flights between Cuba and the United States are set to resume after half a century, but it’s not clear when they will begin, and there will still be no tourism travel.
