A combination of style and substance may have given the edge to Correa, who received 17 of the 30 first-place votes and outpointed Lindor 124-109. Now he prepares to help the team finally win an elusive World Series title. “And I sure hope to do that next season with the Cubs”.

Bryant, the second-overall selection in the 2013 draft, spent 18 games with the Boise Hawks, hitting.

Genovese spent 30 years with the team, signing a few 40 players who made the major leagues, including Jack Clark, Chili Davis, Dave Kingman, Matt Williams, Royce Clayton and Randy Moffitt.

“I don’t think there was any pressure for myself, just because you’re surrounded by (other young players)”, Bryant said.

“I went out there and played as hard as I can with a little chip on my shoulder and things turned out great”. He is only the second Astros player to named Rookie of the Year, joining Jeff Bagwell in 1991. “And I certainly exceeded my expectations this year”.

The Puerto Rican-born switch-hitter was one of the best players in the American League after the All-Star break, hitting. He swiped 13 bases last season, third among NL rookies.

Meanwhile, Correa (17 first-place votes, 13 second-place votes) wasn’t such a clear-cut favorite, barely beating out Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor (13 first-place votes, 14 second-place votes). Maddon – a two-time AL Manager of the Year with the Tampa Bay Rays – is a finalist along with Terry Collins (New York Mets) and Mike Matheny (St. Louis Cardinals).

“At times I kind of got labeled like I really didn’t care about playing just because I was so relaxed up there”, the Cubs’ freshman phenom said.

“I don’t necessarily think it was anything that really clicked for me”, said Bryant, who worked with hitting coach John Mallee on a drill for keeping his bat in the strike zone longer and cutting down on swings and misses in the zone.
