The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive in Victoria today

During the next eight days William and Kate have said they want to meet as many Canadians as possible in British Columbia and the Yukon.

Three-year-old Prince George was adorable in a blue wool jumper, and Princess Charlotte, 16 months looked sweet in a blue floral dress with a matching hair slide, as the family descended down the stairs to the tarmac.

The Royals’ official public departure is scheduled from Victoria Harbour on Oct 1. Overpasses were lined with waving people.

Some of the thousands waiting at the legislature lawn had staked out spots before dawn.

“We thought it was going to be a lot busier”, Lebus said. Her wardrobe will be closely studied by fans of fashion during the tour. “That’s a lovely suit and tie”, she remarked.

Emily Emery and her mother Jill Boudreau drove from Mount Vernon, Washington, for the event. “They were looking for things like – what do I do with my free time – what causes do I take on?” said Dishaw.

But royal watchers say they’re damned if they do, and damned if they don’t.

“It was fantastic. I can’t stop shaking”, said Loreen Topping of Saanich.

The couple will pay their respects at Victoria’s Cenotaph and unveil a new plaque paying tribute to the veterans of Canada’s involvement in the Afghanistan conflict. “It took long enough”.

The Duchess said they had been “super excited” about their trip on an airplane together, as she shared parenting advice with other mothers who had turned out to see the event. The spotlight had been on Charlotte and George during the Cambridges’ arrival in a Royal Canadian Air Force Jet at Patricia Bay, a helicopter base near Victoria.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among the many dignitaries who will be welcoming the couple.

Their first trip to Canada followed their 2011 wedding, taking them to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Charlottetown, Summerside, Yellowknife, Calgary and Slave Lake after that community was ravaged by a forest fire. “We couldn’t be happier for you”, he said. Probably a once in a lifetime chance for most of us here in Canada anyway.

“As any parent who has travelled with children knows, it is a whole different experience when you bring your family with you”.

George is making his second official overseas visit with his parents.
