The End: Cleveland rocks as title drought ends in NBA Finals

“I set out a goal [of] two years”.

Curry sat on the bench for a few minutes as the stage was assembled for Cleveland’s trophy celebration before he went into the mass of victorious Cavs and their followers to congratulate James and his teammates. The Warriors and Cavs faced off in their 13th finals game in two seasons, matching the highest total in National Basketball Association history over a two-year span.

The native of Akron rattled off moments from the lengthy list of Cleveland sports heartbreak and said what it meant for him to personally bring the Cavaliers their first championship.

The Cavs are the first team to win the championship after going down 3-1.

“I can’t wait to get back home”, James said.

Draymond Green had 32 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists for the Warriors, whose bid for back-to-back titles was thwarted.

James outdueled Golden State’s Curry, who was limited to 17 points on six-for-19 shooting, including two failed off-balance three-point shots in the final minutes. He then sprained his right knee in his first game back in Houston when he slipped on a wet spot on the floor.

Coach Tyronn Lue, who took over the Cavs midseason, became the second straight coach to win the championship in his first year – Steve Kerr won a year ago as a rookie coach. We want to get the Cleveland organization a championship, so that’s what we’re all about. “Hopefully we’ll have many more opportunities to fight for championships and be on this stage because this is what it’s all about”.

Now it’s up to Stephen Curry and the Warriors to give the local fans a title to celebrate at home.

Game 7 was the first true nailbiter in the series, with 20 lead changes. “Given that we just had a Game 7 at home against a great team after being down 3-1, we’re very confident that we’ll come out and play a good game”.

The Warriors’ Curry scored 38 points and hit seven 3-pointers in Game 4, helping his team win 108-97.

After he moved through the second half of Game 6 like an old man, Andre Iguodala has been receiving treatment on his back, which was racked with spasms during Thursday night’s contest.

Since the Browns won the National Football League title in 1964, Sunday’s game was the closest any team has been to a championship since 1997, when the Indians lost Game 7 of the World Series to the Florida Marlins in the 11 innings.
