The Exorcist Remake Talk Downplayed

“For the record, we will never attempt to remake “The Exorcist”, the post read. Unless Morgan Creek is planning the biggest 180 since Reagan’s head started doing its thing…

After editors at Hitflix.com published an article reporting that Friedkin “doesn’t seem particularly thrilled about the idea”, he tweeted them a message, writing, “Dear HitFix… correction: I completely denounce a remake of The Exorcist by (production company) Morgan Creek“. And now you can add directors to that list, as helmer of the 1974 original William Friedkin caught wind of the news and took to Twitter to publicly attack the studio’s intentions. If this maelstrom of chatter stemmed from an unsubstantiated rumor, then it makes sense for a studio to rebuke it. However, this came from the company’s CEO. For now, let’s just enjoy the fact that an “Exorcist” remake is off the table again. The Exorcist is based on a 1971 book with the same name and it was the only horror movie to be nominated for an Oscar until 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs.

Deadline’s report claims that Morgan Creek intend to remake “The Exorcist franchise”, although it is not yet clear if that includes Friedkin’s original or not. However, it was also reported that the firm was keeping hold of five of them, with a view to putting remakes into development.
