The first trailer for Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’ is extremely haunting

Just days after the TIFF announcement, the first trailer for the film has arrived.

Directed by Abrahamson (Frank, What Richard Did), Room stars Brie Larson (Short Term 12, The Spectacular Now), Jacob Tremblay (The Smurfs 2, Somnia), Joan Allen (The Bourne Supremacy, Nixon) and William H Macy (Shameless, Magnolia), with Donoghue adapting her book for the screen.

As the title implies, most of it takes place in a small, claustrophobic space; it’s also narrated by 5-year-old Jack, whom readers slowly realize is being held captive along with his mother, known only as Massachusetts.

Somehow, though, director Lenny Abrahamson managed, and his take on Room looks like a sober but gripping take on Donoghue’s bestseller. It will also screen at the Toronto worldwide Film Festival in September. Like any good mother, Massachusetts dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. To Jack, the Room is the world… it’s where he was born, where he and his Massachusetts eat and sleep and play and learn.

Will she ever be able to get them out of Room, and if she does, will they ever truly escape its effects?

The harrowing drama will hit New York and Los Angeles theaters on October 16, with a nationwide expansion planned for November 6.
