It’s no secret that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been cleaning up at the box office; the film shot past billion globally more quickly than any other film (of all time!).

Notable acts that were on the shortlist (revealed in October) included The Smiths, Nine Inch Nails, Janet Jackson and Chic. The 2016 inductees were chosen by more than 800 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

In addition, purchasing Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the PlayStation Store includes a free theme for PS3 or PS4 provided via a voucher code that’s delivered within 5 to 7 days. 2015’s highest grossing movie, Jurassic World, had the advantage of a summer release to aid its assault on the record books.

The last movie to reach $1 billion at similar speed was Jurassic World, which reached the same mark in 13 days back in June. Initially dismissed as nonsense or wishful thinking, the recently released “Art of” book for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has revealed that there was at one time talk of having the father of Luke Skywalker make his return in J.J. Abrams’ movie.

Star Wars also scored the biggest US Christmas Day box office takings in history with $49.3m (£33.2m). It scored the biggest worldwide debut with $529 million.

Disney has been pulling out the stops to raise awareness for the film, from creating a local digital hub for the franchise, to planting 500 Stormtroopers on the Great Wall, and inviting popular singer Lu Han as its China ambassador.

In second place landed comedy Daddy’s Home, opening with $38.8 million.

In third with $17.0 million was another premiere, “Joy”, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. The remake of “Point Break” opened with $10.2 million.

Domestically, Star Wars: The Force Awakens averaged a stunning $48,000 per screen in its second weekend and cumulatively reached $70 million in just 11 days, outpacing Avatar, which took 30 days to reach that same benchmark.
