‘The Force Awakens’ begins its record march with $57M Thursday
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” hurtled toward $125 million in United States and Canadian ticket sales on Friday and a potential record-breaking $225 million through Sunday, giving the long-awaited movie a shot at the biggest opening weekend of all time.

The figure takes the new Star Wars film past Jurassic World’s opening weekend of US$208.8m in North America earlier this year, while the estimated worldwide box office has topped an estimated US$517m.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” this weekend challenged the foreign and worldwide box office records set by the dinosaurs of “Jurassic World”, and impressively did it without benefiting from the world’s second-largest movie market, China. The biggest opening single day record is being held by the Deathly Hollows – Part 2 right now. It was also the first film to ever make more than $100 million on any given day.
The Force is definitely strong with Disney’s new Star Wars movie. That has been held since 2010 by James Cameron’s Avatar, which has grossed more than $115.6 million in Australia. It could eclipse the global opening weekend record of $316.1 million, set again by “Jurassic World”.
The estimated “Force Awakens” gross so far represents more than half the film’s $100 million-plus record in advance domestic ticket sales.
The most anticipated film in the galaxy opened globally Thursday, setting global and pre-sale box-office records and delighting moviegoers who’ve had opening-night tickets in hand for months. The movie studio plans to release four more movies over the next four years, generating more than $25 billion in revenue from theme parks, toys and video games, analysts predict. The film, which carries a production cost of at least $200 million, opened in almost all other foreign markets Friday.
Guess that $4 billion dollar initial investment that Disney made in LucasFilm is paying off.

“Sisters”, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, pulled in $5 million on Friday from 2,962 locations, while “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” netted $4 million in 3,653 locations.
