So far the film has made $517 million around the world since opening overseas on Wednesday. The release of the first Star Wars movie under the Disney banner has alleviated those doubts.
The film is being screened in 4,134 theatres in North America, a record for a December opening.
Some analysts believe it could become the top-grossing film of all time, beating the $2.8bn (£1.9bn) taken by James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar.
“They tailored the campaign to every geography around the world, and did it in a way that still preserved some of the mystery of the film while not leaving a single stone unturned”.
