Box office forecasters say weekend ticket sales for the film may beat the record set in June by dinosaur movie Jurassic World with $US208.8 million ($281 million).
UPDATE 11:55AM: More records set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens – and the film hasn’t even opened yet.
The 3D viewing of The Force Awakens raked in 47 percent of the $57 million.
While the ticket sales of the next day are still to be added into the numbers.
It has smashed records for the biggest opening day of all time but it looks to shatter all time box office records for any film’s opening weekend, as well. Rival studios had been projecting an opening weekend above $250 million since midday Friday, but Disney has opted for a cautious outlook, asserting in the early afternoon that the seventh Star Wars movie would top $200 million and then pushing that to $215 million in the late afternoon. Analysts estimate Star Wars will break another record and have the biggest opening single day. Saturday and Sunday will depend more on traditional walk-up business. The film will be in a total of 4,134 locations on Friday – a record for a December opening. “The Force Awakens” is simultaneously opening around the world just about everywhere but China, where it debuts in January.
Per a Fandango survey of more than 1K Star Wars fans 65% indicated that the film is a definite part of their holiday plans with family and friends while 63% said they’re planning to see the film multiples times in the theater. The average age for a Force Awakens ticket buyer is 44.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set 30 years after the events of the last film. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan sent out a press release that compared Obama’s team to the evil empire of the “Star Wars” films.
