The previous record for such previews was the $43.5 million set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” in 2011, according to data from Rentrak Corp.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” had the biggest opening weekend for a movie ever.
In New Zealand, the first-day screenings alone, starting at midnight on Thursday, netted more than $1.5 million. The movie set opening-day records in Australia, Brazil, Britain, France, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and other countries.

Like the throats of Darth Vader’s commanding officers, box office records have been crushed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The movie is likely to become the highest grossing film in an opening weekend Disney added, while reporting that it had already made $250 million globally.
Disney owns the Star Wars franchise, after buying it from Star Wars creator George Lucas in 2012 for $US4.05 billion, and The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars film in 10 years since Revenge of the Sith. That should make the $200-million-plus production very profitable for the company.
Avatar generated $2.8 billion sales worldwide after its release in December 2009.
