You should know that Hip-Hop started out in The Bronx, but what about the period just before? Enter the thrilling new trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix musical-drama The Get Down.

Though to be fair, this 1970s New York-set music drama looks pretty damn different from that other 1970s New York-set music drama. The show will trace the birth of hip-hop, along with the simultaneous rise of disco and punk, while following a group of young musicians, dancers and graffiti artists.

In addition to Luhrmann, the production team for The Get Down boasts a crazy-good list of names who know NY and street culture well: Grandmaster Flash, Nas, Pulitzer prize victor Stephen Adly Guirgis, and executive producer Catherine Martin.

Part One of The Get Down, comprising six episodes, will premiere on Friday, August 12 exclusively on Netflix around the world. Watch the first The Get Down trailer after the jump, but be warned it may make you really frustrated that you can’t watch the show right freakin’ now.

In addition to Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge), the series’ creative team includes four-time Oscar victor Catherine Martin, Nas, Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis and hip-hop historian Nelson George.
