After news that brands and companies have adopted Schooling’s 50.39-second Olympic record for their own marketing campaigns, it’s high time the swimmer made his own mark.

Joseph Schooling has become a household name overnight after upsetting Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly event on Friday (Saturday in Manila), while also claiming Singapore’s first gold medal in the process.

Well, we reckon that Sabryna Salazar, a 20-year-old student from Texas, may just be cursing the Tinder gods right about now, because she got a right shock on her TV screen recently after realising that a guy she ignored has been busy winning gold at Rio 2016.

SINGAPORE – AUGUST 16: Singaporean Swimmer Joseph Schooling speaks to the media during a press conference at the OCBC Aquatic Centre on August 16, 2016 in Singapore.

They posed for a family picture with his mother May, 61, who was his biggest cheerleader in Brazil.

“Joseph, we love you.and all the best, and thanks for giving Singapore children and Singapore itself a dream”, he said, giving his nephew a hug.

Some fans waited more than six hours at the airport to catch a glimpse of Schooling. “So I want to get back on that 200m fly”, Schooling said.

Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen said in a statement Monday the deferment had been approved.

After his win, one of Schooling’s former Tinder matches suddenly lamented her regrets when she tweeted about her lack of responses to Schooling when she had the chance to follow through more promptly with him back in April. “All three of us together”, Schooling told reporters.

Schooling said he would prefer to be based in the United States, where he would be able to focus on training at a high level.

On the other hand, American Olympic gold medal winners will each receive $25,000 or P1.1 million from the US Olympic Committee, the equivalent of our Philippine Olympic Committee. Many carried banners, flags and homemade signs.

It adds to the first Paralympics Gold medal won by Yip Pin Xiu in Bejing 2008.

Philippines national Emmylou Almeda, who had been waiting since midnight, brought along a printout of a picture she took with Schooling a year ago.

“I’m glad the Government recognises the effort I put in”, said the 21-year-old.
