The Golden Globes kicked off awards season in style last night, amassing 242,000 mentions and counting on Twitter. Basically, Leonardo DiCaprio is the biggest actor in the world at the moment.
Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle was considered to be the underdog during the awards ceremony going up against last year’s victor Transparent (also an Amazon original), HBO’s Veep, Silicon Valley, Hulu’s Casual and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.
Winslet won for best supporting actress in a film for her role in the biopic “Steve Jobs”, Stallone won for best supporting actor in “Creed”, in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa.
DiCaprio ended his speech thanking indigenous peoples for being part of the film. Spotlight, an early Globes favourite about a controversial story uncovered by journalists from The Boston Globe, went home empty-handed despite three nominations.
The film is likely to see a boost after taking the Golden Globe for motion picture drama, while Leonardo DiCaprio was recognized for acting and Alejandro G. Iñárritu was honored for directing.
In the Best Foreign Movie category, Hungarian Holocaust drama Son of Saul was the victor.
Gervais poked fun at Olympic decathlon champion turned Hollywood celebrity Caitlyn Jenner, a pioneer for transgender rights by speaking publicly about her gender change but who was also involved in a deadly auto crash past year.
“Mad Men”‘s Jon Hamm won best TV dramatic actor prize. The film was in competition for the award alongside “Anomalisa”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
Clay Landry, who was the film’s historical consultant, joined host Leisha Grebinski on CBC’s Saskatoon Morning to talk about how he and two colleagues – Loren Yellowbird and Craig Falcon – ensured indigenous culture and people were accurately portrayed in the film. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief”.
And Jennifer Lawrence told off a reporter in the press room who was asking her about her Joy win… while constantly staring at his phone.
