The Greening of the Rio Water Polo Pool

There still aren’t any definitive answers about why the water in the Olympic diving pool turned green. “We understand a series of factors have affected the colour and alkalinity of the water”.

Olympic organizers previously reported that the diving pool turned green due to a “proliferation of algae,” but a spokesperson with FINA, the International Swimming Federation, is now claiming the change in color is because of the adjustment in alkalinity.

Rio organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada agreed that “there was no risk whatever for the health of anybody”.

A statement from FINA says water tanks ran out of one of the water treatment chemicals, causing pH levels outside the normal range. On Wednesday, some complained that water treatments used to clear up the pools were impacting their events.

Pools used for diving are typically warmer than those used for swimming and warmer water is more conducive to algae growth.

Spectators and viewers were left baffled earlier this week when the diving pool began to change colour, eventually settling on a misty green shade, having previously been bright blue.

So what has caused the water to turn green so suddenly, you ask? “But we came here with a mind-set of ‘expect the unexpected.’ If the water was going to be orange, blue, green – it didn’t matter”.

However, social posts coming out of Rio have been indicating that the second pool is actually turning green to match the first.

The Rio Olympics have been filled with headline after headline before the games even started.

Andrada said a test event at the facility did not account for increased use for longer periods during the Olympics.

Confusion and Curiosity struck Olympic divers as they discovered that they will be jumping into what looked like a pool of green jelly.

Cornel Marculescu, the executive director FINA, also said the water has no effect to the health of athletes.
