‘The Handmaid’s Tale wins Hulu its first Emmy Awards, including Best Drama

The 69th annual Primetime Emmys will be awarded Sunday night.

Stephen Colbert started the show with a hilarious musical number about how “Everything Is Better on TV” that featured dancing Handmaids. Only account holders can use CBS All Access, but there is a free trial available.

There were also some unbelievable wins for people of color. It also won for Outstanding TV Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special. A beaming Margaret Atwood, the Canadian author whose 1985 novel is the show’s source, was onstage.

What’s more, Reed Morano received the Emmy for Oustanding Direction in a Drama for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale! “It was after the first season in 1976”.

The NBC series was nominated for 22 Emmy nominations this year, and has seen ratings success with its pointed political humor featuring McKinnon as Hillary Clinton and Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. That’s not a bad club to be in for any of the competing freshman shows.

Patrika Darbo (who won an Emmy last year) and Lily Tomlin are the “Governors” of the Performers Peer Group. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the show’s star, took home her unprecedented sixth consecutive win for playing fictional politician Selina Meyer.

Moss won what might have been the most highly competitive Emmy category of the night.

Not too shabby, Emmys. Meaning if she won, she’d top Louis-Dreyfus and also tie Leechman.

Suspense over the next victor of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series has reached a peak. It was the first time a streaming service came out on top as either outstanding drama or comedy. Donald Glover earned his first two Emmys for directing and starring in FX darling Atlanta.

You could essentially rename this category Battle of the Oscar winners. Kudos to her, to Miller, and to the other winners. In other words, this is a great race.

The Handmaid’s Tale is coming back for a second season, and there’s talk of a Big Little Lies season two (fingers crossed), but hopefully these aren’t the only female-fronted shows we’re talking about next year.
