With the latest release of the “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” teaser trailer, the fans were given a glimpse of an expensive wedding. It also fell short of projections that had the picture opening to $300 million worldwide. “But I feel like three movies in three years is a lot of work and I’m glad to see that we are at the end of that road and can move on to different thematic material”.
Lionsgate split the final book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy into two films, following the precedent of “Twilight” and “Harry Potter”.
The production budget for Mockingjay, Part 1 was $125 million, so we imagine Part 2 was probably around $150, so despite what the studio says, they’re probably a little disappointed that their final Hunger Games movie didn’t open to bigger numbers.
Lead actress Jennifer Lawrence has gone on to appear in other high-profiled movies. The last “Games” movie, “Mockingjay – Part 1″, topped the box office for multiple weeks after it was released.
The weekend’s other newcomers just couldn’t hang with Katniss, 007 or Charlie Brown. A similar road for the new installment would put it on course to end in the $270-280M neighborhood. The Katniss of “Mockingjay” isn’t as singularly focused as the one in the “Arena”.
Mockingjay – Part 2 sees Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen continue her assault on the Capitol and the evil leader of Panem, President Snow (Donald Sutherland). But the film has been slowing down tremendously, only making $14.6 million in its second week for a total domestic gross of $153.7 million. With massive cumes in China and the United Kingdom, Sony’s global tally shot up past $670M. 6m (£9.6m), followed by The Peanuts movie with $12.8m (£8.4m). One of toughest farewells he has had to make is to Jennifer Lawrence, who he considers a one-in-a-million kind of person. Seth Rogen-led festive comedy The Night Before, about a group of friends who embark on an annual Christmas Eve outing, landed in fourth with $10.1m on opening. The film successfully hits each plot point hard, swiftly creating emotional hits and shocks even for those that have read the book. The film, loosely based on a 2009 Argentine thriller that won the foreign-language Oscar, garnered about $6.6 million. Audiences approved more overwhelmingly, giving the film an A-minus grade, according to polling firm CinemaScore.
The Thanksgiving holidays is prime viewing time to go to the theater.
The mining disaster flick The 33 tumbled 61% in its sophomore frame to an estimated $2.2M giving Warner Bros. a bad $9.9M. Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies clung to the top ten in its sixth round with an estimated $1.9M, down 54%, putting Disney at $65.2M.
