The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 Opens to Series Low

The series high is the second movie, Catching Fire, which opened to a colossal $158 million in 2013.

The Hunger Games franchise has accumulated $2.3 billion worldwide in theaters, in advance of “Mockingjay, Part 2”, said movie industry analyst Paul Degarabedian at Rentrak.

Weirdly though, given the hype for Katniss Everdeen’s final adventure, box-office figures for its opening weekend weren’t up to those of previous instalments even though this last one – Mockingjay Part II – is better than Part I. But because Coin sees Katniss as a potential threat to her own power, she denies her permission to take part in an upcoming raid on the Capitol’s headquarters in District 2.

“If we live in a world where a [NZD] $153 million opening is a disappointment, that’s pretty insane”.

It grossed another $147 million overseas. “It was just a trailer”. Splitting things in two is all the rage in Hollywood these days, so we at the Emerald made a decision to give two of our writers the chance to air their thoughts on the end of the Hunger Games. It cost a reported $200 million to make. I’m sure everything, or mostly everything, that happens in Part 2 also happened in Collins’ book (I’ve yet to read any of them), but from a cinematic standpoint, the filmmakers have spread the events and underlying conflicts too far out and too thin, which causes MockingjayPart 2 to drag a bit. This remake was reportedly produced for $19.5 million, which will be tough to recoup with a slow start like this.

The Jonathan Levine-directed film received an A-minus from CinemaScore and 64 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

“This is a movie that people love”. From a potential trap being triggered at every step to the climactic rebellions, the movie constantly had you at the edge of your seat.

“The Secret In Their Eyes” faces fiercer headwinds. The thriller about a team of FBI agents involved in a murder investigation stars Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Even in China, where the Hunger Games is enjoys a strong fan base, Mockingjay 2 also underperformed, earning $16.4 million versus Mockingjay 1’s $21.9 million box. The original ‘Hunger Games’ premiered to a massive $152.5 million in 2012.

“We’re in the home stretch”, Dergarabedian said. “This is going to factor into the Thanksgiving play period, and the twists and surprise ending are going to keep water cooler conversation going”.

“Spectre” is still at the runner-up spot after easing to a weekend total of $14.6 million while “The Peanuts Movie” earned a total of $12.8 million.

Third was the computer-animated 3D cartoon “The Peanuts Movie”, which pulled in $13.2 million.
