The Jungle Book Keeps Crown At Box Office

None of this weekend’s new movies were able to dethrone The Jungle Book from the No. 1 spot at the box office. Studio estimates place it just under $9.4 million, about $40,000 ahead of Keanu. Once it lands, Disney will have accounted for three of the top five movies of the year, along with “The Jungle Book” and “Zootopia.”Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. It is unbelievable to think that Disney will likely have three $300 million earners released within three months of each other, as they stack up Zootopia, The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War.

In second places was “The Huntsman: Winter’s War”, in its second week of showings, with a $9.4 million weekend. That’s more than four times the closest competitor, New Line’s moderate opening for the Key and Peele action-comedy “Keanu” with $9.2 million at 2,658 sites. Critics panned it, but somehow it still made $8 million, no doubt thanks to Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis and the aforementioned Ms. Roberts.

Ratchet & Clank”, the animated big-screen version of a Sony PlayStation game, opened with an estimated $4.8 million, well below analyst expectations that went as high as $10 million. Disney-Marvel’s superhero tentpole took in an impressive $37.8 million from 30 global markets within two days on Wednesday and Thursday. All in all, it was a huge week for The Jungle Book, especially considering industry insiders had the movie pegged to earn roughly $35 million domestically for the weekend. Civil War launched overseas this weekend to an estimated $200.2 million, setting all-time opening records in territories like Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.
