The Jungle Book Roars Past Box Office Competition

Disney’s The Jungle Book ruled the USA box office during its second weekend, mauling the competition as it raked in US$60.8 million (RM237.561 million), industry estimates showed yesterday. The reimagining of the classic Disney cartoon racked up another $60.8 million to bring its domestic total to $191 million.

Rounding out the top five this week are Barbershop: The Next Cut, Zootopia, and The Boss.

“‘The Jungle Book’ proves that a four-quadrant PG-rated movie can have appeal to virtually every demographic and with the quality of moviemaking to back up the hype, the results have been staggering”, he added.

So far “The Jungle Book” has earned $393 million worldwide and has been greenlit for a sequel.

The Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron starrer “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” saw an opening of $20 million.

Japanese drama Flying Colors came in at No. 7 with $630,000, followed by the Chinese romantic film Insomnia Lover with $300,000 and Yang Qing’s Chongqing Hot Pot, which raked in $260,000 to take its cumulative numbers to $56.9 million after 24 days. The audience was 61 percent female and 53 percent under 30.

Joe Roth produced Huntsman: Winter’s War, which is directed by first-time feature helmer Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who worked as a visual effects supervisor on Snow White.

After Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ record-shattering run and with Captain America: Civil War on the way, “the Mouse House is killing it right now”, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. The animated hit also took in another US$10.8 million overseas to pass the US$900 million mark globally. The other new mainstream attraction, A Hologram for the King, the comedy-drama starring Tom Hanks, earned just over $1-million, good for eleventh place. Bleecker Street saw less impressive results for Amazon’s Elvis and Nixon with US$470,000 at 381 locations.
