The Jungle Book tramples competition at the U.S. box office
Cast member Neel Sethi poses at the premiere of “The Jungle Book” at El Capitan theatre in Hollywood, California April 4, 2016. In its third weekend, the Disney talking-animal tale earned an estimated $42.4 million in North America, while newcomers “Keanu” (at an estimated $9.4 million), “Mother’s Day” ($8.3 million), and “Ratchet and Clank” ($4.8 million) combined for about $22.5 million. After an opening weekend that basically exceeded expectations and a second weekend in which it trounced The Huntsman: Winter’s War, it should come as no real surprise to hear that in weekend number three, the movie was able to actually beat out three newly released movies. All three films will be in the top ten next weekend. Still, Mother’s Day managed to crack the Top 5, which couldn’t be said for video game adaptation Ratchet & Clank.

Overall, industry-wide totals were well below those of last weekend and a year ago.
In second place for a second weekend was The Huntsman: Winter’s War. After that, things seemed mercifully quiet from the Marshall movie front, a pause that ended this weekend with the arrival of his newest holiday debacle, Mother’s Day. After 16 days of release “Jungle Book” has a cumulative total of $131 million.
With Captain America: Civil War opening next weekend in North America, the box office was largely in a holding pattern.
Meanwhile Disney’s Zootopia dropped seventy-one percent in its seventh week for weekend earnings of $492,527, and has now made $27.3 million. Ratchet & Clank has posted a 19% rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at global theaters (excluding the US and Canada), according to comScore: 1. ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, ‘ $3.8 million ($2.8 million international). 10. Not even playing in all markets, the latest Marvel installment pulled in $200 million and is on track to play in the same leagues as ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’.
With US$33.9 million in the bank, this US$115 million production is headed to write-down territory.
