The Kiwi link to Mad Max: Fury Road

British costume designer Jenny Beavan kept things down-to-earth in a leather jacket as she collected the Oscar for her work on Mad Max: Fury Road.

“There have been very good films in the past that have been nominated for many, many Oscars and not won one – films like The Color Purple come to mind”.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who’s 0-fer as an acting nominee, is expected to finally take home a trophy for his performance in that film, in which he played an 1820s trapper, Hugh Glass.

Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega and Damian Martin won the Oscar for Best Hair and Makeup Styling for the film.

At one point, after Fury Road had won three awards in a row, it became a running joke, with comedian and presenter Louis C.K. quipping, “And the victor for Best Documentary Short is …”

The fourth chapter in the Mad Max franchise was scheduled to be shot in 2001 with original star Mel Gibson again in the lead, but when the September 11 terror attacks hit the USA it was delayed.

“Us Mad Maxes are doing OK tonight”, editor Margaret Sixel, wife of the film’s director-producer George Miller, said on stage when she picked up best editing. Best animated feature film went to “Inside Out”, Pixar’s eighth win in the category since it was created in 2001. “Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right it’s racist”, he said.

The Aussie Mad Max: Fury Road posse has been bouncing from party to party and awards ceremony to awards ceremony, including last week’s Baftas in London. “I thought she was sensational”. The story was great and the acting was even better. Gibson said in his acceptance speech, “I’d like to chalk this one up as the first Oscar for diversity”.

With the Oscars taking place this weekend and Mad Max: Fury Road up for “Best Picture”, a simple question emerged: Would this 2016 Oscar nominee be a contender against other classic vehicle chase movies?

Fury Road was directed by George Miller, in his 70s and still making movies that 20-year-olds rave about.

The 88th Academy Awards are airing from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

Inarritu, who won the Oscar last year for Birdman, is the 1/8 favourite this year, with Miller second at 6/1, then Adam McKay for The Big Short and Spotlight’s Thomas McCarthy equal third way back at 25/1. Jennifer Jason Leigh is a conniving fugitive in “The Hateful Eight”.

The routine was followed with a video bit in which black actors took roles in films that had been nominated for Oscars, including Whoopi Goldberg in “Joy” and Rock in “The Martian”, as well as a freaky appearance by actress Stacey Dash, who had called for the elimination of Black History Month.

The Revenant topped the nomination list with nods in 12 categories, while Mad Max: Fury Road is just behind with 10.
