The last push to deliver millions of holiday gifts
In 2013, the companies were overwhelmed by the surge in holiday season volumes, driven by the e-commerce surge in the country, along with the harsh winter, which posed to be an impediment for the ground networks for UPS and FedEx-leaving an estimated 2 million packages undelivered. Last year, the shipping company delivered 35 million packages to just USA customers, but this year that number has increased to 36 million packages. “I got everything taken care of thanks to Amazon, Best Buy, Target”, said Justin Garcia, an online Christmas shopper.

The online sales crush caused some retailers’ websites to crash and merchants to run out of popular items. This year, the U.S. Postal Service says it expects to deliver almost 600 million packages between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, about 10.5 percent more than last year, according to a spokesperson.
Online sales represent 10% of the overall sales at the retail level, said Forrester.
Mail delivery services will be back to business as usual on Monday, December 28, but plan ahead – New Year’s Day is coming up next Friday so there won’t be any pick ups or deliveries January 1, 2016, with one exception noted below. Earlier this month, an influx of orders meant a decline in on-time deliveries for UPS in particular, according to data from ShipMatrix, a shipping software company.
Christmas is only days away, but you still have time to send your gifts. Jet.com a start up of just six months that calls itself an Amazon competitor, has issued a statement that customers should expect a delay on shipments. There are some last minute shipping options available, but they’re going to cost you.
Amazon: Tuesday is the last day to get free two-day shipping with Amazon Prime. Customers have until Wednesday to send packages via Priority Mail Express.
“We’re committed to “cleaning out the building” on Christmas Eve, and that usually means delivering into the evening”, she said. “This is without a doubt the busiest one I’ve ever seen, and it has been consistent every single day since November 30”.
Delivery times, however, were down, with the average order-to-delivery time across all 62 retailers studied slipping 20 percent to 6.9 days.
Saks Fifth Avenue: Christmas orders have to be submitted by 12 p.m. ET Wednesday, Dec. 23. That’s the overnight, or in some cases, two day shipping.
