The Latest Emanuel directs police to review crisis training
The woman who was killed, Bettie Jones, was a downstairs neighbor who had been asked by LeGrier’s father to keep an eye out for the arrival of the police, according to both families. But before that happens, she said, they plan to join marches downtown to demand police accountability. One of the daughters asked one of the police officers, ‘Why did you shoot my mother?’ His response was ‘Your mother’s dead. She says they should use stun guns or other nonlethal methods instead.

Police said “officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon, fatally wounding two individuals”.
Chicago police said it “extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends”.
Mr LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, placed candles outside the two-storey home where the two died.
Though no one witnessed the shooting, multiple family members said they think police shot through the door, striking Bettie Jones three times.
The killings occur amid national concerns over a series of African-American shooting deaths by police that have given rise to the Black Lives Matter movement. Jones, who lived in a first-floor apartment, was shot through the door, said her cousin Evelyn Glover.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is asking the interim Chicago Police superintendent and the chief of the Independent Police Review Authority to review police training in wake of Saturday’s fatal police shooting. He also said police can’t comment. He said Saturday it was “very early on in the investigation” and he couldn’t release further details.
The crowd of supporters nodded their heads as Cooksey spoke about people in the neighborhood not being able to trust the Chicago police department, which is now the subject of a Justice Department civil rights investigation.
The shooting comes after weeks of demonstrations in Chicago over police brutality following the release of a video last month showing Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke shooting Laquan McDonald in October 2014.
Family members and others at the news conference wore black T-shirts critical of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Shortly after the video’s release, the city announced it would expand the body camera program for police, which will record officers in the line of duty.
“No mother should have to bury a child”, she said.
A prayer vigil will take place Sunday afternoon outside the homes where the shooting took place.
“This family is absolutely devastated”, the Rev. Marshall E. Hatch of a West Garfield Park church said in a statement early Sunday, adding that the shooting showed how “deeply dysfunctional the relationship is between this department and its citizens”. He said community members need to also step up. When the father returned to his second-floor apartment early Saturday, the son appeared to be a “little agitated”, Antonio LeGrier said.
He said he heard loud banging on his locked bedroom door around 4:15 a.m. and that his son said, “You’re not going to scare me”. She said the recent volatility in Chicago, which now has arrived on her street, has her anxious. LeGrier’s father told the Tribune that he had “emotional issues” and trouble controlling his anger, but that he should not have lost his life over it. Relatives of Jones said they are demanding answers for the troubling accidental shooting.
He said he heard gunshots as he made his way down from the second floor and then saw his son and Ms Jones lying in the foyer.
Both were black, the medical examiner’s office said.
WLS reported that LeGrier’s father called 911 saying his son was holding a metal baseball bat and acting erratic. LeGrier, the 19-year-old who was fatally shot, was a Northern Illinois University student.
Emanuel’s office said in a statement Saturday that IPRA would share its evidence with the county prosecutor’s office.
“Anytime an officer uses force the public deserves answers, and regardless of the circumstances we all grieve anytime there is a loss of life in our city”, reads Emanuel’s statement.
Jones, a mother of five known for working with community groups committed to reducing violence, had hosted family on Christmas Day, friends and relatives said.
“Where was the Taser?” she said.

Jacqueline Walker, a friend of Bettie Jones who was also present at the news conference, asked why police “shoot first and ask questions later”. “I’m numb right now”.
