The Latest on the 2016 campaign: Trump on defending Obama

“And by the way, he’s an American, he’s a Christian”, Bush said while speaking at a Mackinac Republican Leadership conference dinner here in Michigan.

The 2016 Republican presidential candidate has been mingling at an Iowa event for evangelical voters.

“I think this gentlemen here has proven through his actions what he can do”, Meekhof, R-West Olive, said during an off-campus Kasich campaign event at the 2015 Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference.

“By the way Donald, when you say you cherish women, that really doesn’t make it any better”, she said.

It’s possibly one more self-inflicted dent in the party’s professed commitment to broaden its appeal and promote tolerance.

“We need to begin to get back to that degree of civility before it’s too late in this country”, Bush said.

“If you assume we want to proceed heading in the identical primary course – simply sort of fiddle across the edges – then I ain’t your man”, he informed the lunch viewers of about 2,000 Saturday. He says there’s a difference between campaign conservatives who talk a good game but haven’t walked the walk, and consistent conservatives who are the same yesterday and today.

It’s a tribute of sorts that’s typically reserved for high-profile candidates. Just in the past few days, their comments have underscored that the problems extend beyond the GOP’s well-documented troubles appealing to Hispanics. It can be tough, though, to avoid getting drowned out by language sure to stir up people.

Jeb Bush responded Friday night to Donald Trump’s decision this week not to correct a questioner who said President Obama is a Muslim who is “not even an American”. “I consider Michigan absolutely vital on the road to the White House”, Kasich said.

The GOP candidate said a Cruz administration would ensure the “persecution of religious liberty ends today”, while also calling for a Department of Justice investigation into Planned Parenthood.

Carson found no defender in rival John Kasich.

“Just always know that in your life, whatever it is, you’re in it to change a part of the world where you live”, he said. “Those are the qualifications that matter to me”, the Ohio governor told NBC.

Democrats have won every presidential election cycle in Michigan since 1992, when Bill Clinton beat President George H.W. Bush. Would I be comfortable?
