The longest night of the year arrives tonight
Although it happens on the same day across the Northern Hemisphere, the solstice will occur at different times in different countries, and this year the sun will rise over Stonehenge in Wiltshire at 8.09am, it will set less than eight hours later at 4.02pm. That might seem a little bleak, but think of it this way: Every day, from now until June 20 (the summer/June solstice) the days get a bit longer, and night a bit shorter (get the times for your own location here). Below we look into why – as part of six things you need to know about the solstice…

“Animals were slaughtered to avoid having to feed them through the winter, which meant that the winter solstice was often celebrated with a great feast”. To be exact, the winter solstice occurs at 9:48 PM MST.
For the day of the Solstice only, admission to the Stonehenge site will be free, allowing the druids and spectators to conduct their obeservances freely. While the Northern Hemisphere is burdened by long nights, the Southern Hemisphere experiences their longest day of the year and the official beginning of summer. It marks the longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.
If you join the meteorological thinking on winter, winter is nearly one third over.
Schaefer will host the Winter Solstice concert at St. John the Divine, an annual event.
“Traditionally the Original People have always gone into ceremony to celebrate what is considered the longest night-the Winter Solstice”, says Turtle Lodge on its website.
Google has made a decision to mark this year’s Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, with one of their trademark Doodles on the Google homepage. The sun will be directly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn and is closer to the horizon than any other year. But celebrating this celestial moment goes back to ancient times, where for many cultures the solstice was thought of as an auspicious occasion.
The solstice occurs at the same instant everywhere on Earth.

Perhaps the most popular celebration of the winter solstice that is still celebrated today takes place at the prehistoric monument Stonehenge.
