The Margin: Lightning causes Chicago subway station structure to collapse

Blue Line trains were halted Sunday evening due to a possible lightning strike hitting the tracks, according to the CTA and fire officials.

CTA spokesman says the platform did not collapse, but was damaged.

The Chicago Transit Authority suspended Blue Line trains in both directions between the Kedzie and Racine stations when pieces of a pedestrian ramp were ripped off and blown onto train tracks. A train that was in the station was evacuated, but no injuries were reported.

“We are still assessing the full scope of the damage”, CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski said. Part of the canopy collapsed onto the Blue Line tracks and sent electricity through the rest of the structure that was still standing.

More than 24,000 are reportedly without power across Chicago.

Conditions were expected to be much improved Monday, with a high of 86 degrees and clear skies, forecasters said.
