Every computer-generated effect is used to enhance the story to show us Watney’s vast, lonely surroundings and make us believe it too.

A scene from The Martian. “Once you do that, you can put a lot of other story elements in”, Scott said.
NASA has released stunning images of real regions including Acidalia Planitia on Mars, a location associated with the best-selling novel and Hollywood movie, “The Martian”.
But we’ll forgive The Martian for being so last week. Why?
Accommodated in the Andy Weir novel, “The Martian” – more “science-fact” than science fiction – relishes practical scientific problem solving and NASA’s spirit of quest. However, as Scott reviewed the resulting footage, he discovered the unique perspectives that the GoPro cameras unlocked, enabling a new way to showcase the intimate struggle of astronaut Mark Watney’s life on Mars. Scott has constructed a cerebral, smart piece which is a welcome change from the “switch-your-brain-off” pop-corn movies that make up the majority of multiplex offerings nowadays. It was then Watney was faced with a critical question, does he give up or does he fight to survive.
Boosting these efforts was Weir’s book, which already relied on a dense level of research. The best moments of this film, though, are when Damon is alone on screen.

They get to Mars, and everything goes according to plan.
Only halfway through a 31-day manned mission to Mars, the Ares III crew is forced to abandon the planet when an unexpectedly severe storm hits their base camp.
If you prefer your space abandonment movies to have a sense of humor, you’re not going to do much better than The Martian this summer, or any other summer for that matter. She cried. At one time she was the Film Editor for NOW magazine and also the secretary for the film section of the Critics’ Circle and the celebrity coordinator for its annual film awards’ event.
In an effortless, matter-of-fact performance Daniels excels in delivering an intelligent, authoritarian character who is entirely comfortable with both his thoughts and actions.
“The Schiaparelli crater is nearly 500 kilometres in diameter”.
Nasa collaborated on the film with 20th Century Fox Entertainment, providing guidance on production design and technical consultants, including Jim Green, director of planetary science, and Dave Lavery, program executive for solar system exploration.
And even though NASA’s cooperation in the film no doubt enhances the accuracy, it could be seen as having another goal; what is authentic to a few, after all, is infomercial-y to another.
