The Media Standoff Between Trump and a Gold Star Family

Trump faced widespread criticism in recent days from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, other veterans groups and fellow Republicans for disparaging the parents of Humayun Khan, a US Army captain who was killed in 2004.

In a emotionally charged convention speech delivered with his wife, Ghazala, by his side, Khan berated Trump for the GOP nominee’s proposed ban on Muslim immigration and accused him of sacrificing “nothing and no one” for the United States.

Bondi, who endorsed Trump before the primary and has campaigned with him in Tampa, said she’s in favor of vetting immigrants and a “safe immigration policy” but wouldn’t criticize Captain Khan or his mother.

Trump stoked further outrage by implying Ghazala Khan didn’t speak while standing alongside her husband at the convention because she’s a Muslim woman.

Responding to the speech, Trump said in an interview with ABC News that he’s, “made a lot of sacrifices”.

On Monday Senator Kirk, who has said he is not voting for Trump, told reporters, “I didn’t like that”.

Alaska Republican U.S. Sen. “I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates”, McCain said in his statement issued Monday.

“I was viciously attacked by Mr. Khan at the Democratic Convention”.

Businessman Paul Nehlen, who is challenging House Speaker Paul Ryan in a primary in the 1st Congressional District, was lauded Monday in a tweet by Trump for his “kind words”.

“We all say we’re in a club that no one wanted to join”, Meredith said, referring to the Gold Star military families who have all lost a loved one in war. “The last book my son read that I sent him was Senator McCain’s book about courage: “Why Courage Matters”. Hillary voted for the Iraq war, not me!” But he and running mate Mike Pence have called Khan a “hero” several times.

Trump is now rightfully drawing criticism from multiple sources and both sides of the political aisle for his disparaging comments about this Gold Star family.

The couple expressed their discontent with the Republican presidential candidate’s remarks, including Trump’s own defense for his comments on his sacrifices.

“We need to honor their sacrifice for our country and we need to honor their son’s sacrifice for our country”, Christie added.
