The Mummy Reboot: Tom Cruise Reportedly in Talks to Star
According to the trade, that development includes a master plan from Universal that will take a cue from the Marvel comics flicks, and involve all of the studio’s classic monsters, including Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man, among others. Universal has not commented on casting speculation regarding The Mummy reboot. The studio announced earlier this month that it’s looking into prequels and a spinoff for the Fast and Furious franchise, and then of course there’s that revival of the Universal Monsters helmed by writers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Hopefully the big name stars don’t outshine the actual stars of these films: the monsters.

What do you think of Cruise shuffling into Universal’s monsterverse? The latter are in charge of building the Avengers-style monster universe, so they’ll need to make sure they get this one right.
The script for the new version is now being developed by screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), but Variety confirmed that the film will take place in a contemporary setting, unlike previous iterations, which were period pieces.
The first movie was released in 1999 and starred actor Brendan Fraser in the title role.
Cruise has his work cut out for him with sequels Top Gun 2, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and Mission: Impossible 6 all on the go.
Cruise is in talks to star in the reboot, sources tell Variety, helping to launch Universal’s new era of monster films.
