The nation runs to remember Terry Fox

Since his attempt to run from coast to coast, annual Terry Fox Runs are held all around the country he tried to run across.

A long-time organizer of the local run, the Orillia woman stands as living proof of the event’s success in helping combat the disease.

Brenda Kruger was diagnosed in 2006 with malignant melanoma in her left leg. Kruger had the cancer removed, but sometimes she suffers painful side effects because of it.

More than $700 million has been raised worldwide in Fox’s name to fund the most promising and innovative research in Canada.

Organizers of the Woodbine Beach event hoped to beat last year’s fundraising effort of $89,000.

Kruger said it hasn’t stopped her from leading an active lifestyle.

Lauren McCurrach is proving you can make a difference at any age.

Chris Barfoot, an event volunteer, said Sunday’s turnout was one of the best he’s seen.

Elizabeth Westersund, with the organization, says the run is a great way to get Canadians together to keep Terry’s legacy alive.

Canadians continue to try to follow in Terry Fox’s footsteps. But here in British Columbia, we also remember Terry Fox the man.

Numerous participants wore stickers with the names of people they were running for.

Seven-year-old Camden Barnikis finished his first Terry Fox Run on his bright yellow bicycle.
