The notoriously NSFW Pirelli calendar has a whole new look for 2016
Instead of scantily clad models, photographer Annie Leibovitz will be capturing fully dressed female artists, musicians, writers, and sports stars. This year, Pirelli has gone a decidedly different route, choosing to collaborate with legendary portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz to feature shots of some of the world’s most inspiring women. “I wanted to make a classic set of portraits”, Leibovitz said in a press release”. “I thought that the women should look strong but natural and I chose to keep it a very simple exercise of shooting in the studio”. ‘This calendar is so completely different.

Williams and Schumer will be joined by Kathleen Kennedy, Yao Chen, Yoko Ono, Mellody Hobson, Fran Lebowitz, Ava Duvernay, Agnes Gund, Patti Smith, Shirin Neshat and Tavi Gevinson.
“I’ve seen a few of the photographs and they’re striking”, Smith said in an interview. The Pirelli Calendar will also live in a dedicated digital space inside the new website, pirelli.com, which goes live October 20. “I’m honored. I think it’s unbelievable to be a part of this group of women who are being celebrated for so many different things in something that’s traditionally celebrating one thing – which is also great!”
In previous years, Pirelli has made headlines for including plus size models and men, but from what we can see of the photos so far, the shoot seems to include decidedly less skin than the NSFW calendars they’re known for. “I look at Annie’s project not as a protest, but as a celebration”.
Serena has already confirmed her involvement in the project on Twitter, writing on Friday: ‘Guess what??
