The Oculus Rift is expensive, but (hopefully) worth it

Preordered Oculus Rift units will start shipping in March.

The general pre-order for the Rift will come with a carrying case and a copy of the games Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie.

The Rift will begin shipping around the world in March and promises to bring an immersive experience to gamers and movie fans.

So what will this high cost of entry mean for the Oculus Rift, and virtual reality technology on the whole? For now the early adopters need to prepare to open up their wallets if they want to strap their videogames to their faces.

Oculus Rift, the virtual reality company owned by Facebook, has priced its much-awaited virtual reality headset at $920 in Australia.

Pricing was revealed at the time preorders went live, previously said to be upwards of $350 Dollars, somewhere “roughly in that ballpark”, according to this interview with Luckey. In the second half of 2016, buyers can add the Oculus Touch motion controllers, for an unknown price. This barely scrapes the promised Q1 2016 release which is also pretty close to the expected release of the consumer version of the HTC Vive in April.

After years of waiting, the Oculus Rift is finally ready to hit store shelves this year.

If you’re not sure if your system is up to the task, you can check using the Oculus compatibility tool. If you pledged enough to the Kickstarter campaign, then you should be getting a free one.

This was all explained last night by Oculus founder, Palmer Luckey on Twitter, where he said: “Good news, everyone: When you preorder Rift, you also reserve your spot for Touch preorders”.
