On Thursday, protests were multiplying.
The site of the shooting in Falcon Heights is close to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and not far from a clutch of fields associated with the University of Minnesota’s agricultural campus. The governor said he and other state officials would seek more direct involvement. “Would this have happened if those passengers would have been white? I don’t think it would have”, Dayton told reporters. “So I’m forced to confront that this kind of racism exists, and it’s incumbent upon all of us to vow and ensure that it doesn’t happen and doesn’t continue to happen”. The Justice Department has opened an investigation into the Baton Rouge shooting.
Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, posted the Facebook Live video on Wednesday night.
Reynolds began recording the video while Castile lay motionless in a blood-splattered shirt as the officer held him at gunpoint through the driver’s side window.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday evening weighed into the fatal shooting of Philando Castile in Minnesota, the aftermath of the which was streamed on Facebook. The president said the shootings are symptoms of “the broader challenges within our criminal justice system”, racial disparities, and a lack of trust between law enforcement and communities they serve.
Rallies took place in other major cities around the U.S.as well.
St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, shown here in 2014, was identified as the cop who shot Philando Castile.
Reynolds said Castile was shot after police pulled their auto over, citing a broken tail light.
On the video, the officer tells her to keep her hands up and says: “I told him not to reach for it. I told him to get his hand out”. Police in Minnesota say a man has been taken to a hospital in unknown condition after being shot by an officer while inside a vehicle with a woman and a child.
Shots are fired during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. “We will not move”, as officer attempted to clear the area.
Two Dallas officers were shot, KTVT reported. “It was down to a technical glitch and restored as soon as we were able to investigate”. Several dozen people also gathered in downtown Newark, New Jersey, disrupting traffic to have their voices heard. “This has to stop, right now”.
Reynolds recorded the minutes following the shooting and livestreamed it all through Facebook.
She said she did not know how to break the news of the death to her boys. “They did not check for a pulse at the scene of the crime”.
St. Paul Public Schools issued a statement, saying Philando Castile was not only a valued and widely loved employee, but also a product of the school district, having graduated from Central High School in 2001. She said Castile had a license to carry a firearm.
“He was trying to get out his ID and his wallet out of his pocket”, she said.
“I know my son… we know black people have been killed…”
Police said a handgun was recovered at the scene.
A source close to the investigation told CNN that problems started when a homeless man approached Sterling on Tuesday and asked for money, becoming so persistent that Sterling showed him his gun, the source said.

The shootings occurred as Americans across the nation vented their anger over the police killings of two black men in two days.
