The Pumpkin Spice Latte is back!

The Chile Mocha, inspired by the Champurrado, a thick Mexican drink made from chocolate and corn masa, will take a traditionally chocolate-flavored drink in a new direction with spice from chile peppers. On Sept. 3, Starbucks Rewards loyalty members will learn how they can get early access to the drink. Now, however, Starbucks is benefitting from the 13 years it has spent establishing the PSL as an essential part of fall.

Marking the beginning of fall, the seasonal drink won’t officially be on the Starbucks menu until September 6 but customers aware of its availability can feel free to order it at locations across the country starting today.

But the pumpkin spice latte returns Thursday to stores.

“Add pumps of Pumpkin Spice Flavoured Syrup into your next latte or try both the PSL and Chile Mocha over ice or as a Frappuccino Blended Beverage”, she said. Expect cocoa powder to be infused with fall spices and then mixed into steamed milk and espresso-the concoction will then be topped with whipped cream, cayenne pepper, ancho chile, paprika, cinnamon, sugar and sea salt.

Last year, the classic PSL got a bit of a makeover. It’s not regular almond milk, it’s Almondmilk, a recipe that Starbucks developed to work well with espresso. I’m not really a PSL fan (it’s always been a little too sweet for me), but the Chile Mocha was a creamy, rich drink with just the right amount of kick.

As someone who adores spicy anything, I can’t wait for the Chile Mocha. It will be available nationwide by the end of September.

“The Pumpkin Spice Latte is a symbol of the season, it welcomes in the fall for so many people”, Karr says.

Chile Mole will be available in participating stores across the US and Canada. If the Chile Mocha can reach Pumpkin Spice Latte levels of adoration, that would be great, but Starbucks wouldn’t mind if customers just want a fall fling with the new drink.
