Among those waiting to see the Queen were TV stars Sandy and Sandra from Gogglebox, and Joey Essex, of The Only Way is Essex fame, who was sporting a colourful tie he said had been given to him by a friend of Princess Diana.

As part of the April 21st celebrations, the Queen is unveiling a plaque marking the start of a four-mile “Queen’s Walkway” at the foot of Castle Hill in Windsor.

Her Majesty began the celebrations by lighting the first beacon outside Windsor Castle at 7pm before the rest of the country follows suit.

Hugo Vickers, a historian and biographer and the trust’s chairman, led the Queen to a panoramic panel displaying the details of the walkway, which she unveiled. “She’s Lilibeth”, Rhodes said. In 1987, she had six days here. “She was strong and she withstood that”, he added. The siblings had been featured on breakfast television earlier and in the excitement the number nine balloon had floated off over Windsor, but luckily another was donated by a local shop. She’s a sprightly, petite lady. “So she’s been incredibly supportive and I’ve really appreciated her guidance”. “She just picked up her great-granny’s handbag and that was it”.

Designer Stella McCartney looked back on the ceremony where she was made an officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Among those waiting to see Her Majesty was Sandra Riley, 57, who was celebrating her own birthday. After the appointment, Obama said she was “delightful” and reminiscent of his grandmother.

Terry Hutt and Margaret Taylor camped overnight to ensure they got the best spot.

Sandra Martin, who was wearing a pair of union flag decorated glasses, said: “We’ve taken time out of filming to come here and stayed overnight in Windsor”.

The Queen wore one of her favourite brooches today, an eight-point star known as the Jardine Star.

Town crier Tony Appleton, 80, from Chelmsford, had been at the Lindo Wing when Prince George and Princess Charlotte was born.

Prime Minister David Cameron praised her achievements in a special “humble address” to parliament while her son and heir Prince Charles read from William Shakespeare in a special broadcast on BBC radio.

Here in Wales, there was a 21 gun salute at Cardiff Castle at lunchtime, while a special beacon was lit in Cardiff Bay this evening.
