‘The Revenant’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ lead Oscars 2016 nomination list

“The Revenant”, meanwhile, included a surprise: Tom Hardy’s nomination for best supporting actor.

This year’s list of nominees was led by “The Revenant”, with 12 nominations, followed by “Mad Max: Fury Road”, with 10.

Redmayne secured his nomination for his role as a transgender artist in The Danish Girl and will also compete with Irish actor Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, Matt Damon for The Martian and Bryan Cranston for Trumbo.

Earning nods for best animated feature: Disney/Pixar’s brainy Inside Out made the cut, as did Charlie Kaufman’s acclaimed stop-motion Anomalisa. As a sequel, the blockbuster was widely expected not to be nominated for best picture. Comedian Chris Rock will host it. The 2015 hashtag #OscarsSoWhite was quickly revived on Twitter on Thursday. The science fiction smash “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Netflix, which has previously scored nominations for documentaries, fell short in its first bid for fiction film nods.
