“The Revenant”, “Mad Max” dominate winners list at BAFTA Awards

The BAFTA awards, which were held at the Royal Opera House in the center of London, are often seen as one of the indicators towards possible success at the Hollywood Oscars at the end of this month.

The Revenant beat several hotly tipped awards contenders, including Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance Carol. He also mentioned actors Peter O’Toole, Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman as his inspirations in the industry.

People reports that DiCaprio also thanked his costar Tom Hardy, along with the British actors he has admired over the years.

The Best Film winners declared by the British awards body for six consecutive years until 2014 were also reportedly the same Oscar’s Best Picture awardees.

“So I found a picture of Joanna Hoffman and decided to make myself look as much like her as I could”.

Meanwhile George Miller s visually stunning post-apocalyptic action film “Mad Max: Fury Road” cleaned up with four technical awards, including for the scrappy-punk costumes of its warring tribes.

Both supporting acting prizes went to British winners.

In other news, despite being in separate movies, fans are still wishing that Leonardo DiCaprio would just have Kate Winslet as his girlfriend. Her previous wins were for Sense and Sensibility and The Reader.

Fellow British star Mark Rylance was named best supporting actor for his role as a Russian spy in Bridge Of Spies.

Leonardo DiCaprio has won Best Actor at this year’s BAFTAs.

Revenant bagged five awards at the BAFTA, which includes awards for best cinematography and sound.

Writer-Director Naji Abu Nowar and Producer Rupert Lloyd received the award forOutstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for their first feature, Theeb. “Theeb” is up for an Oscar for best foreign language film. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” won the BAFTA for visual effects.

The movie which has been picking up countless awards all season could indeed be the dark horse come Oscar night.

Financial misdeeds movie The Big Short won Best Adapted Screenplay and the Catholic sex abuse film Spotlight won Best Original Screenplay.

Stars featured in the event’s In Memoriam segment included Alan Rickman, Sir Christopher Lee, Maureen O’Hara, Omar Sharif and David Bowie. He already had won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for the role and is the favorite to win at the Oscars, where “The Revenant” will be vying in 12 categories.
