For best actress, “Carol” star Cate Blanchett and “Room” star Brie Larson, who portrayed a kidnapped mother living in captivity with her son, are seen as the favorites in a category that also includes veteran British actress Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years“). The black cast and director of hip hop biopic “Straight Outta Compton” were also left out of the race.
The Revenant and Australia’s Mad Max: Fury Road will vie with The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, The Martian, Room and Spotlight for best picture, the highest honour in the film industry.

The only best-picture contender without a white protagonist is “Straight Outta Compton”, which has an outside shot of joining the favorites.
Sharpton, through the NAN’s Los Angeles office, is urging a nationwide “TV tune-out” of the Oscars show, which is to air February 28.
