‘The Revenant’ triumphs at Bafta awards

Each won nine BAFTA nominations, though “Bridge of Spies” was the only one to win because of Rylance’s performance. For Brooklyn, financed as an Irish-UK-Canadian co-production, to win Outstanding British Film is a huge achievement.

HOLLYWOOD-Well it’s the last precursor in the awards arena for cinema before the Academy Awards take place on Sunday, February 28.

Mark Rylance won the supporting actor award for “Bridge of Spies”, beating Idris Elba who had been nominated for Netflix civil war story “Beasts of No Nation”. The Revenant has earned DiCaprio his sixth Oscar nomination – and, many believe, his best shot at finally winning. “Theeb” is up for an Oscar for best foreign language film.

Fassbender, whose mother is from Larne, lost out to Leonardo DiCaprio in the best actor category, while Naji Abu Nowar and Rupert Lloyd took the outstanding debut award. The film which is being seen as a key predictor of success at the upcoming Oscars was named best film.

The 40-year-old actress won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in “Steve Jobs” at the BAFTAs in London on Sunday and during her emotional acceptance speech, she revealed the insecurities she overcame to forge a successful career. “So much time has passed that it doesn’t matter what I say now”, Winslet said. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” won the BAFTA for visual effects.

When Jenny Beavan, who won the costume design award for “Mad Max: Fury Road”, collected her award wearing pants, a leather jacket and a scarf, Fry said: “Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards dressed as a bag lady”. Pioneering black American actor Sidney Poitier – the first black best-actor Oscar victor, in 1963 – received a lifetime achievement award, the BAFTA fellowship.

He said: “I grew up in this industry”.

The EE Rising Star is John Boyega, and he was voted by the public, reports Coming Ssoon. “Spotlight, ” about the Boston Globe’s effort to uncover a priest sex-abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, won for best original screenplay.

“So I’m just happy that more people are going to hopefully finance films like this in future”.

The head of the British film academy said she supported the protesters’ aims.

Among other films in the victor list are “Inside Out”, which won the Best Animated Film, and the Amy Winehouse biopic “Amy” that nabbed the Best Documentary gong.
