‘The Revenant’ Wins Big in Britain’s BAFTA Awards
The role of a fur trapper fighting for his life has earned DiCaprio his sixth Oscar nomination – and, many believe, his best shot at finally winning.

“I am overwhelmed”, said Inarritu as he accepted the award. We did the work, we put our heart and soul into this movie. “It’s up to the world now and voters to decide”, he said at a post-ceremony news conference.
The trophy for best actress went to the young Brie Larson, 26, for Room where she played a young mother poignant sequestered with her child.
Blanchett was nominated for best actress for her role in the lesbian love story Carol.
“Look at me now!” Each had nine BAFTA nominations, but “Bridge of Spies” won only for Rylance’s performance, while “Carol” was shut out.
Brooklyn, the Irish immigrant drama starring Saoirse Ronan, was named outstanding British film, while Amy took the documentary award.
Mad Max: Fury Road took the Baftas for editing, make-up and hair, costume design and production design while the award for original music went to Ennio Morricone for The Hateful Eight. Spotlight was successful in theOriginal Screenplay category, and the BAFTA for Adapted Screenplay went to The Big Short.
Stars attending included Cate Blanchett, Benicio del Toro, Mark Ruffalo and Game Of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke.
Collecting her third Bafta, Winslet, 40, hailed director Danny Boyle as “amazing” to work with and called the film’s lead star Fassbender “an extraordinary actor”.
The ceremony, hosted by Stephen Fry, was staged at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, central London.
“So I would dedicate it to all those young women who doubt themselves, because you shouldn’t be doubting, you should just be going for it”.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was awarded for special visual effects.
The black comedy anthology “Wild Tales”, written and directed by Argentine Damian Szifron, won for non-English language film.
The movie awards season has been dominated by debate about why the film industry remains dominated by white actors. Last year, all players – Eddie Redmayne, Julianne Moore, JK Simmons and Patricia Arquette – who won a BAFTA in London were then crowned with an Oscar in Hollywood.
Two black actors are up for BAFTAs – Idris Elba in the supporting actor group for “Beasts of No Nation” and “Star Wars” performer John Boyega in the rising star category.
This was DiCaprio’s first-ever BAFTA win and it’s making people wondering if this means he’s a shoo-in for the Best Actor Oscar too.
A small group calling for a quota system in nominations protested the event, handing out leaflets on the red carpet that called the television industry “male, pale and stale”. “I haven’t been doing for a long time”, he said.
