The donations – along with what is raised by Salvation Army bell ringers with their distinctive red kettles – will benefit the charity’s programs for the homeless, families, seniors and others in need. To help with this year’s campaign, call 479-968-5358.

The West Princes Street shop has launched an appeal for volunteers as November and December are busy months for Salvation Army stores.

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign got its start in 1891 in San Francisco when a Salvation Army captain despaired over how many citizens were going hungry during the holidays.

“Volunteers often don’t realise how valuable they are; a couple of hours or even a few days a week make a huge difference to us”.

The Salvation Army earlier this week announced its Stepping Stone men’s shelter is in danger of closing because of a funding shortage.

“Many families are still finding it very hard to stay afloat, and we’ve seen it firsthand in the numbers of people coming to us for help”, said Major Ken Nicolai, head of the Racine office.
