The Sand Fire Is Now 40 Percent Contained

A state of emergency has been declared in California as wildfires ravage its iconic coastline along the Pacific Coast Highway at Big Sur.

The Big Sur closures were put into place for parks that draw 7,500 visitors a day from around the world for their dramatic vistas of ocean and mountains.

Spokesman Dennis Weber says facilities aren’t endangered but officials chose to get the public out of the areas for safety and to keep roads clear and avoid exposure to bad air quality.

The Wyoming fire in a remote region burned almost 11 square miles (28 square kilometers) and forced the evacuations of 900 people but no homes had burned by Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

As of Tuesday night, some 3,000 firefighters hacked through dense brush and chaparral and had extended containment lines around 25 percent of the fire, which has charred 59 square miles since Friday, officials said.

Torlakson, the state’s superintendent of public instruction, is acting as the state’s chief executive because Gov. At one point, the fast-moving wildfire threatened thousands of homes and caused 20,000 residents to evacuate.

Since the blaze broke out, 18 homes in Sand Canyon, Bear Divide and Little Tujunga were destroyed, one structure was damaged and five suffered minor damage. “Well, think about it, they nearly burned to death here because the fire came on so fast and I don’t know how we escaped it but thank God we did”.

The largest is in Los Angeles County, where the Sand Fire has burned more than 33,000 acres since last weekend.

The fire in the Shoshone National Forest west of Dubois has burned almost 11 square miles and is putting about 290 homes and guest ranches at risk in the remote area. Most of the roughly 20,000 evacuees forced out by a wildfire were cleared to go home, but firefighters still have huge work ahead Tuesday in taming a massive wildfire northwest of Los Angeles.

Santa Clarita is within an hour’s drive of downtown Los Angeles, and the Sand Fire’s effects have been widespread, with ashfalls reported in some parts of the metropolitan area.

Three Forest Service firefighters lost their homes at a remote fire station in the San Gabriel Mountains, including two who were fighting the fire at the time.

He said the Board of Supervisors would ratify a local state of emergency declaration at its meeting today.
