The Universal-owned animation company has had great success, bringing in more than $3 billion worldwide since 2010.

Secret Life of Pets is a burst of color and flashy imagery in every moment, if you have a headache skip the movie until it subsides.

Made for $75 million, the film’s historic performance has already made it Universal’s highest-grossing title of 2016 and Illumination’s second-highest opening ever, behind last year’s Minions. Not only will Ghostbusters have to contend with another weekend of Secret Life of Pets, but then it will have Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course to deal with as well.

The Illumination and Universal film, revealing what pets of all shapes and sizes do after their owners leave the house, boasts a voice cast that includes Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart (it’s the first time the three have worked on an animated movie), Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were: – Central Intelligence (US$8.1 million) – Independence Day: Resurgence (US$7.7 million) – The BFG (US$7.6 million) – The Shallows (US$4.8 million) – Sultan (US$2.2 million). That’s more than enough to take the current year’s number one spot from Captain America: Civil War ($406.2 million).

After floating on top of the charts since its record-breaking June 8 premiere, Finding Dory sank to third place with US$20.3 million. The movie, which cost around $140 million to make, has earned a dismal $38.7 million to date.

“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” about hard-partying brothers searching online for plus-ones opened at $16.6 million, taking fourth place.
