Phelps though has a realistic chance of going ahead of India as he is still to participate in two categories at Rio, starting with Wednesday’s 200m individual medley, followed by Thursday’s 100m butterfly.
Amid the Phelps party, fellow American standout Katie Ledecky seized another gold, this time in a tightly contested 200 freestyle.
The swimmer’s win in the 200-meter butterfly Tuesday night not only gives him more gold than Scrooge McDuck, but it means he’s drawn into a tie for the most Olympic titles ever, according to historians. “I wish things would have gone differently for me but that’s just a part of work and things you have to deal with and I just had to regroup and keep moving on”.
While Phelps won the 200-meter butterfly and the USA team took gold in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay, Katie Ledecky claimed her second title of the Games.
Felix said she has made a lot of progress in healing but acknowledged she has “some issues with recovery”. Lewis closed out with a Super Bowl victory.
It was another performance for the ages, but Phelps has done it so many times that nothing else would have been fitting.
The Americans also led preliminaries of the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay with a group that, in a bit of a surprise, included Missy Franklin.
Of course, the stadion is a race measuring about 200 yards and diaulos is one that’s twice as long. With his head almost at the wall, he took one more stroke to make sure he got there first, his arms slamming against the timing pad. We needed to get them a good lane tonight. “We know our coaches are going to make the decision putting our best foot forward”.
With Ledecky and Smith assured on being on the team for the final, that left two available spots.
Fifth at the first flip turn, a bit faster than she usually goes out, Ledecky powered to the front on the third lap and feistily fended off a hard-charging Sjostrom coming to the wall.
He quit after the 2012 London Games but came out of retirement to participate in Rio. Taking a 2-1 lead into the final minute of play against Colombia, the USA gave up a goal on a set piece to finish group play with a tie.
“It’s the closest I’ve come to throwing up at the end of a race”. If that’s including me, then that’s what I want.
America’s biggest swim stars stood up on the blocks and blew away the competition as the United States continued its dominance at the pool.
Another American, Abbey Weitzeil, advanced with the seventh-fastest time. So did Campbell’s younger sister, reigning world champion Bronte, in the eighth spot.
