‘The Simpsons’ to air first one-hour episode; poor Mr. Burns

The closest that the series has come to an hour long episode was in the 1995 “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” episode with the first part airing as the season 6 finale that May, and resolution arriving several months later with the season 7 premiere. Taraji P. Henson (Empire) and Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) will also guest star for the episode. Called “The Great Phatsby”, it is about Mr. Burns being conned out of business by a ruthless music tycoon and his plot for revenge afterward. We’ll get to see Lisa get wooed by the richest kid in Springfield, while Marge opens up a odd boutique.

“This was just going to be a regular episode, but the table read went so well, in a fit of passion and excitement and ambition and excess, we chose to supersize it”, said Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman to EW.

The Simpsons returns Sunday September 25, 2016 at 8pm on FOX.

Twenty-eight years and 600 episodes into its record-setting life on television, “The Simpsons” has done just about everything there is to do with a TV show.
