The Smithsonian Is Hiring an Official Beer Historian for $65k/Year
The Smithonian National Museum of American History has a position open for a beer historian… and it definitely sounds like a pretty awesome job.

As pointed out by Time’s Money, there’s been a massive surge in craft brewing in recent years, with the number of American craft breweries expanding 15 percent in 2015 alone, although that may likely be in part due to the ever-expanding legal parameters of what actually constitutes a beer as being “craft”. Read his full guide at the link below. It’s being funded by the Brewers Association for the Museum of American History.
The exact title is “historian/scholar” for the American Brewing History Institute.
According to data from the Brewers Association, there are now 4,269 breweries in America-a historical high since 1873, when there were 4,131 breweries in the country. The same exhibit covers things like wine and farmers markets. “Well, this movement with small-scale, local regional beer is part of the ethos”.
‘In order to see a trend, you have to see the deep history, ‘ Johnson told ABC News. [The beer historian] will attend to both.
‘You always want to understand, “How did we get to 4,200 small breweries here in 2016 from just a few 30 years ago?” The museum already has collections dating back to the late 19th century and early 20th century, but very little from after World War II. This gap is what the museum hopes the beer historian will help to fill.
The job is based in Washington, D.C. but requires a significant amount of travel for the next three years.
If you’re thinking about applying for this opportunity, make sure to submit your CV and at least three references by August 10.
