The Sound of Music Star Charmian Carr dies aged 73

The Sound of Music actress Charmian Carr has died at the age of 73.

Whilst still embracing her history with the Academy Award winning “Sound of Music”, Carr later founded an interior design company in Southern California.

People took to Twitter to express their grief for the late actress, who inspired many to sing and perform.

Carr, who was 21 at the time The Sound of Music was filmed, famously sang “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” in a gazebo with her onscreen boyfriend, Rolfe, played by Daniel Truhitte.

Twentieth Century Fox said: ‘The Sound of Music lost a beloved member of the family with the passing of Charmian Carr.

According to Carr’s website, she kept in touch with the actors who played the six other Von Trapp children over the years and “considered them her second family”. Charmian Carr was a college student when she chanced into getting an audition for the part of Liesl von Trapp. After acting in the Sound of Music, she married and then made a decision to leave the movie business and raise her two children, Jennifer & Emily.

She started hosting “Sound of Music” singalongs in 2000, and attended nearly all of the shows at the Hollywood Bowl until 2012.

Carr is survived by her siblings Sharon, Darleen, Michael and Brian; her children; her niece Julie and her four grandchildren, Emma, Derek, William and Tucker.

“We’re second family”, said Kym Karath, who played the youngest von Trapp, Gretl, in an AP interview past year to commemorate the film’s 50th anniversary.
