Tesla confirmed that the 70 and 75 (available in both rear-drive and AWD specifications), will share a battery pack going forward, with the only difference being some lines of code that restrict the 70’s capacity. Now Tesla confirmed that while the option is not available now, it will be by the end of the week, and every updated Model S 70 produced since the “facelift” was equipped with the new 75 kWh battery, but software-limited to 70 kWh.

According to a user-submitted post coming out of the Tesla Motors Club (TMC) forum, gcgp inquired about the new battery option with their Delivery Specialist and was told via email that Tesla will be providing 70D owners the option to upgrade to a 75D through an over-the-air software update.
The 75D will slot between the entry-level 70, and range-topping 90kWh battery vehicles.
Tesla substituted the larger pack in its all-electric SUV before any 70-kWh Model X crossovers were actually built.

That would swell the number of Model S variants to six, including the 70, 70D, 75, 75D, 90D, and the P90D performance model. It’s also being reported that the new battery will cost buyers an additional $3,000, with all-wheel drive sticking around as a $5,000 upgrade. That’s a 19-mile range increase across the board from the new pack, and when you opt for the upgrade, Tesla will rebadge your 70 as a 75. Sadly, the unnamed Tesla representative who responded the query of Electrek did not provide a timeline for the introduction of the new model.
