The U.N. Holds Emergency Session To Condemn North Korea’s Missile Launch

“The members of the Security Council strongly condemn this launch”, Venezuelan U.N. Ambassador Rafael Dario Ramirez Carreno, the council’s president for February, told reporters on Sunday while reading a press statement after the closed-door meeting.

The three leaders agreed to rapidly adopt new UN Security Council resolutions against Pyongyang, involving strong and effective measures, sharing another view that the DPRK should pay a harsh price corresponding to its repeated provocations of significance.

The United Nations Security Council, after an urgent meeting Sunday, said the weekend rocket launch was a threat to world security and a clear violation of U.N. resolutions banning North Korea from developing its nuclear program.

These developments indicate that prospects for North Korea to “address security and humanitarian concerns of the global community as expressed in the resolutions are increasingly remote”, said the report.

Besides the United States and South Korea, condemnation for the launch also came from Japan.

Right after the separation, the first stage was exploded into some 270 fragments with self-destructor to prevent South Korea from discovering the first stage and assessing it, the ministry said.

The launch follows North Korea’s widely disputedclaim last month to have tested a hydrogen bomb.

“The state agency on space exploration, following the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea on giving priority to science and technology, will continue to launch more man-made satellites”, the embassy said in a statement on Sunday, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency.

North Korean rocket and nuclear tests are seen as crucial steps toward the North’s ultimate goal of a nuclear armed long-range missile arsenal.

While China firmly opposes the deployment of such anti-missile hardware so close to its borders, the move to place THAAD in South Korea underscores Washington’s frustrations with Beijing’s failure to take a tougher line with Pyongyang over its nuclear weapons program.

South Korea announce that it will begin discussing their Northern neighbor’s actions with the United States in light of the emergency session. The missile did not pose a threat to the US or its allies, officials said.
